The importance of taking action on violations of human rights & the environment<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
OTTAWA<\/strong> – Peter Julian MP (Burnaby-New\u00a0 Westminster) and National Caucus Chair and Official Opposition Finance\u00a0 Critic for the Federal NDP is hosting the second annual Walking the Talk on Human Rights Abroad<\/em><\/strong> conference in Center Block, Parliament.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\"\"<\/a>\u201cThis is an important opportunity to have a renewed\u00a0 discussion about the type of legislation that will make a real positive\u00a0 impact on Canada\u2019s international reputation, particularly in the wake of the defeat of Bill C-300 last year. I am happy to host this second conference, work with human right activists\u00a0 and help offer an opportunity for them to meet with interested members\u00a0 of parliament on key issues<\/em>\u201d said Julian.<\/div>\n

This international conference will provide an update on existing jurisprudence and examine how Julian\u2019s private members Bill C-323<\/strong> would provide a legal recourse that is increasingly relevant to\u00a0 international human rights issues today.<\/div>\n
Bill C-323 \u201cAn n Act to amend the Federal Courts Act (international promotion and protection of human rights<\/em>)\u201d would create a new civil cause of action allowing Canadian Federal Courts to hear and decide claims for violations of international law that occur outside Canada.<\/div>\n
Over 100 activists are expected to attend the\u00a0 conference which features a number of presentations dealing with\u00a0 different issues affecting human rights and the environment.<\/div>\n

\u201cThe defeat of Bill C-300 has not reduced the\u00a0 importance of issues of human rights violations abroad by Canadian\u00a0 companies<\/em>\u201d said Julian. \u201cThere is a very real sense that people are\u00a0 ready to get to work to push for structural changes that will improve Canada\u2019s reputation abroad.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Though many Canadian companies operate abroad in a\u00a0 socially responsible way a number of recent cases have had a negative\u00a0 impact on Canada\u2019s reputation. These cases of human rights violations\u00a0 tied to the operations of these companies abroad are on this year\u2019s conference agenda.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cHuman rights activists in Canada are reengaging\u00a0 now. Though it may take a number of years before we can put in place the protections that so many around the world are seeking, there is no\u00a0 doubt that there is a real appetite for Canada to walk the talk abroad\u201d, said Julian.\u00a0 \u201cWe cannot have Canadians companies observe fundamental laws in Canada and break the law when they go\u00a0 abroad. Most companies understand this, some do not. That is why we must continue our efforts to provide a Canadian window for victims to seek ju<\/em>stice\u201d, said Julian.<\/div>\n
